SUMMARY:October Cultural Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Fridtjof Nansen is considered the godfather of all modern polar explorers. In 1888 (at age 26)\, he became the first person to successfully cross Greenland from coast to coast.  At age 31 he organized and led a second expedition to the North Pole; although he and his crew ultimately did not reach the Pole\, they came closer than anyone had come before\, beating the previous record  by 150 miles. Timothy Boyce will describe who Nansen was\, how and why he organized his polar explorations\, focusing on the incredible challenges his voyages faced\, and his indomitable will to overcome all obstacles.  This lecture will also touch upon Nansen’s post-explorer career as statesman and humanitarian. \nThis meeting will also be in-person as well as on Zoom so watch for the link on the lodge website homepage

SUMMARY:June Cultural Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our June 3rd Cultural meeting\, we will once again\nwelcome members to join us on the lawn (weather\npermitting) to play some kubb.\nKubb is a lawn game of Viking origin where the\nobjective is to knock over wooden blocks (kubbar) by\nthrowing wooden batons (kastpinnar) at them. Kubb\ncan be described as a combination of bowling and\nhorseshoes. Play takes place on a small rectangular\nplaying field\, known as a “pitch”. “Kubbs” are placed at\nboth ends of the pitch\, and the “king”\, a larger wooden\nblock\, is placed in the middle of the pitch. Some rules\nvary from country to country and from region to region\,\nbut the ultimate objective of the game is to knock over\nthe “kubbs” on the opposing side of the pitch\, and then\nto knock over the “king”\, before the opponent does.  Any \nperson at any age can play this game.\nAfter kubb\, come inside for coffee and conversation.\nSet-up: 6:30 PM Play kubb: 7:00 PM Meeting: 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:February Cultural Meeting
DESCRIPTION:February has Valentine’s Day\, when we celebrate love. Let’s show our love\, fraternalism\, creativity\, and\ngenerosity at the February cultural meeting on Sunday\, February 6th\, by having a fund-raiser to benefit the\nSons of Norway Foundation\, which provides much needed help to members nationwide in times of disaster.\nSince we still have to be flexible because of the ongoing pandemic\, we’ve planned an event which can be\ndone in person\, via Zoom\, or as a hybrid event. \nLet’s create themed baskets to be auctioned off at the February meeting. Love to bake? Make a basket with cooking\nitems or baked goods. Love the movies? Make a movie night basket. Love to celebrate? Make a wine and cheese basket.\nLove to read? Make a book lover’s basket. Love to garden? Make a basket with seed packets and gardening tools. How\nabout a game night basket\, a Lego basket\, a graphic novel basket\, or a Valentine’s Day hearts and flowers and chocolate\nbasket? This is an opportunity to have some fun\, admire one another’s creativity\, and demonstrate our generosity by\nhelping fellow Sons of Norway members in need. If our meeting is in person\, bring your baskets to the Nordic Hall\nto be auctioned off. If our meeting is by Zoom or is hybrid\, prepare to show us your basket from the comfort of your\nown home. We’ll arrange a time and place for people to meet to claim their baskets. Hint: you are allowed to put\ntogether more than one basket\, and you are not only allowed\, but encouraged\, to bid on more than one basket! \nProtocol for entering the building: You must show proof of vaccination before entering the Nordic Hall. Masks must\nbe worn. If you are not vaccinated and want to attend the meeting virtually\, send an e-mail to Peter Vatne at\npresident@norumbegasofn.org so he can send you the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:May Cultural Meeting - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The January 2021 edition of Viking featured member David Ellingson’s kayak adventures through the fjords of Norway. The self-described “water spirit” tackled epic mileage while receiving help from “fjord angels\,” communing with the spirits of his ancestors\, and learning some life lessons along the way. \nIn Ellingson’s video Coming Home\, he recalls times on his family’s Iowa farmstead\, highlighting his increasingly daring paddle trips. Eventually he considered his great-grandparents’ courageous emigration and decided he had to take his own leap of faith and experience the Old Country—by kayak. Follow Ellingson and his fellow paddlers\, nicknamed the Spirit of Norway\, as they recount the highs and lows of their time on the Nærøyfjord\, Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord. \nJoin us to watch this interesting 25 minute video of Ellington’s adventure.  A zoom link will be provided on our Lodge website 30 minutes prior to the meeting  Just go to www.norumbegasofn.org and a pop-up message will appear on the home page shortly after logging in.

SUMMARY:Juletrefest (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Norumbega’s annual juletrefest will be celebrated on Friday\, December 4th\, on Zoom.  Some things will be different; some things will be the same. We will sing our traditional songs\, even if we can’t join hands and go around the tree. We can still join our voices and share the holiday spirit. In between the songs\, we’d like you to share the things that make Christmas special to you: special traditions\, favorite cookies\, favorite ornaments on the tree\, special dessert\, memorable moments in your family\, etc. \nLuana has gotten word from the “julenissen’s” communications director that we’re on his calendar this year as well\, so we won’t have to miss out on that. The gift exchange will be different so you will need to check the December Tidende for details about how it will work. \nThe recipient of the travelling almond will be revealed! \nSee you all on December 4th!

SUMMARY:September Cultural Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are now living through a difficult time in that we can not meet physically together due to the Corona virus restrictions.  However\, modern technology does allow us to meet virtually with video meeting software.  While this changes our preferred way of getting together it provides opportunities to associate with each other. \nThe traditional welcome back dinner for our September meeting can not be done this year unfortunately.  However\, we will hold a virtual Zoom meeting for all who want to attend.  The time will be rolled back to 7:30 pm and you will get login information via email as we get closer to the date.  Since this year marks the 50th anniversary of our lodge we will hope that members will share what the lodge has meant to them over the years.  This could include reminiscing about special events that were especially memorable from years past or stories about members who are not with us anymore.  Whatever you wish to share is going to be welcomed during the online meeting.  For those without computers\, a call-in number will be provided so that you can participate. \nNOTE: This particular meeting is being held on a Saturday evening.

SUMMARY:May Cultural Meeting - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, our May Cultural Meeting has been cancelled due to the Covid19 issues.  We will attempt to schedule Wendy for a future meeting. \nOur May cultural meeting will feature author Wendy Swallow.  She has written a book titled “Searching for Nora; After the Doll’s House.” \nHer new novel\, Searching for Nora: After the Doll’s House\, follows Nora as she struggles to make a life for herself in Kristiania (now Oslo) and then escapes Norway in disguise\, a passenger on an emigrant ship and soon a reluctant settler in the harsh Minnesota prairie. \nSearching for Nora tells a tale that is both intimate and sweeping.  Nora’s narrative\, written as a memoir\, spreads over four decades and is woven together with the story of a second character\, Solvi Lange\, a young university student in Norway in 1918.  Solvi seeks to unravel the mysteries of her grandfather’s hidden shame and the fate of a long-vanished Norwegian feminist. \nFor more information click here
