DESCRIPTION:At the Friday May 2nd Cultural Meeting at 7:30 PM we will have a presentation by Bob Ellertsen about a book he translated for Norwegian to English.  The title\, translated to English is “Farsund’s Occupation History”.   The book was written by a Norwegian man named Johannes Seland.  The book is about what it was like for the people of the Norwegian seaport town of Farsund and and the nearby farming community of Lista during the occupation of Norway by Germany in World War II from 1940-1945.  The author Johannes Seland was deeply involved in the resistance to the occupation.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Please notice the day and time change for January through March Cultural Meetings.  We switch to Sunday afternoons\, at 3:00\, for these three months to allow for daytime driving. \nOur January meeting is a chance for you to come and support our newly elected officers as they get formally installed into their positions.  Supporting your lodge leadership may seem mundane but it is actually very important to show our support for them.  We also get to learn what the responsibilities for each position are.  Without our leaders working together there would be no lodge meetings to enjoy. \nSOUP ANYONE?\n\nPlease come to our January Cultural meeting where we will not only be installing our officers for the coming year\, but we will enjoy your favorite soups.  If you have a favorite soup recipe\, please let us potentially make it our favorite as well by sampling it.  We would like to have many of you bring a batch of your soup to the meeting to share with everyone.  We will then take a poll of the favorite one among the entries and perhaps the winner will receive a prize and will have your recipe published in the February Tidende.  After the sampling and voting is done we can enjoy a Sunday afternoon dinner consisting of the rest of the soups and some bread.  Join in the fun but remember\, our next three months of meetings will be held on Sunday afternoons beginning at 3:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Maine Nordmenn member\, Eric Lund. will be presenting the impact of Scandinavian settlements on English and Scottish History. \nDoors open at 1:00 pm.  Soup and bread will be provided but please bring a desert to share. \nEric recently returned from a trip to Scotland and Northern England where he saw frequent reminders of the extend to which Norwegian and Danish invaders occupied territory in this locations. In this illustrated talk he will describe the extent to which these Norse settlers left a long term mark on English and Scottish culture. \nEris taught about many aspects of European history at St. Olaf College in Minnesota until his retirement in 2015.  He moved to Maine in 2018. \n  \n

It’s a big event and draws not only lodge members but lots of other families from the Norwegian community in Boston.  There is a short parade\, open faced sandwiches\, hot dogs\, and field games for the children. \nMembers: In order for it to be a success\, we need volunteers. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 28th\, 3:00 p.m.\, we will have a special meeting at the Unitarian Memorial Church\, 102 Green Street\, in Fairhaven\, MA\, to meet and welcome the members of what was originally Den Norske Foreningen and later became Dovre Lodge. Dovre Lodge merged with Norumbega at the beginning of this year\, just before the 140th anniversary of that organization. We want to welcome our new members from Dovre and help acknowledge and celebrate the long history of their lodge\, the oldest in the Third District. \nWe hope as many members as possible will be able to come to the celebration. it will be an informal gathering with coffee\, cake\, and other goodies\, and will give us all an opportunity to get to know one another. If you think you’ll be able to come\, please \nlet Luana know (vicepresident@norumbegasofn.org) by Friday\, April 19th\, so she can make sure there will be enough tables and chairs (and cake) to accommodate everyone. And if you would like to contribute something to the dessert table\, we won’t say no.

DESCRIPTION:L’Anse aux Meadows \nWhat is L’Anse aux Meadows? \nWhere is it located? \nIs it a real historical place? \nWhy is it important to Nordic and American History? \nThese questions and more will hopefully be answered at our November cultural meeting.  Pete Hanson will be sharing from his experience of having traveled to the historic site with several other Sons of Norway members.  This site has generated a number of theories and surprising explanations as historians try their best to interpret the Viking era writings called sagas.  Ultimately\, the theories and discussions bring into play our own local Boston area and other parts of New England.  Did the Vikings land in New England over 400 years before Christopher Columbus?

DESCRIPTION:At the cultural meeting on Sunday\, March 5th\, we will hear from Elsa Comiskey about the tradition of bunads from the different ‘fylker’ in Norway and look at how each county developed its own unique style.  \nElsa Comiskey was born in Løten\, a small village in Norway.  Afrter finishing Hamar Katedralskole\, Elsa moved to  the U.S. in 1961.  She continiued her education in the U.S. and received her M.Ed and worked with international students at Northeastern University.  Later on\, Elsa worked for a modeling agency in Boston.  Knitting and hiking in the mountains are two of her favorite activities. \nIf you have a bunad\, please wear it to the meeting.  If yours has shrunk from hanging in the closet too long since you last wore it\, bring it to show.
